What do you do when the price of Stone Crab Claws gets too high? You buy Jonah Crab Claws and never miss a beat!
Crab claws are great steamed with dipping sauces, but the preferred method is to simply serve them cold with cocktail or mustard sauce. Either way, it’s a great way to start a meal or add to your selection of seafood for a night of deliciousness!
I love Stone Crab Claws but you can’t always find them in the stores, even in Florida. That’s when I look for their cousin Jonah Crab Claws. They may not be quite as sweet but they’re pretty close and the price is definitely better.
I picked up a bag of these Jonah Crab Claws one of the wholesale clubs, The best way to eat them is chilled and served with melted garlic butter and a Crab Shack copycat mustard sauce.
You can steam the claws but it will have a tendency to dry them out.

Just bought 2 lbs for $15.00 per pound @ Sam’s Club in Kalamazoo Mich. Pricey but still cheaper than Stonies!

Can you describe the taste of the Jonah crab claws?
Compared to blue crab, lobster, snow crab ( all fresh)
Chef Dennis Littley
I would say it was closer to a stone crab than a blue claw, and closer to snow crab than blue or lobster.

Question: There’s a recipe in the latest Hannaford’s magazine for Jonah Crab Claws with garlic wine sauce. I purchased the claws frozen and once the sauce is made the directions say to add the crab until heated through but it doesn’t say if they should be thawed, first?
Chef Dennis Littley
I would definitely thaw them first in the fridge. Just don’t wait longer that necessary to use them once they are thawed

I just bought a lb of them for 6.00 at my local grocery store! Same thing as stone crab without the high prices!

What’s is the best way to get the meat out the claws, with out the meat all broken up?
Chef Dennis Littley
I would either do a saute dish like a scampi, make crabcakes or make it into a cold crab salad. The meat is already cooked, so if you do saute, don’t heat it too long.

We had never seen them or eaten them. We were looking for crab legs to make gumbo and ran across these in WalMart. They cost about $7.50 per pound and came in a 2 lb. bag. Living on the West Coast, we were not familiar with this East Coast crab. We are in love with them now and hope that WalMart continues to provide them. Brand name is Sea’s Best.

What is a good price per pound to keep an eye out for
Chef Dennis Littley
That I’m not sure of Mike. I only ever buy them at the big box stores and they’re usually around $8-9 per pound.
