Ingredients to make Homemade Poultry Seasoning
Let’s start by gathering the ingredients we need to make my Homemade Poultry Seasoning Recipe. In Chef Speak, this is called the “Mise en Place,” which translates to “Everything in its Place.”
Not only does setting up your ingredients ahead of time speed up the cooking process, it also helps ensure you have everything you need to make the dish.
Can I change the seasonings in my Homemade Poultry Seasoning?
Absolutely. You can add or remove any seasonings you choose to this seasoning blend. Add lemon peel, onion powder, dried sage, dried bell pepper, or any of your favorite seasonings to the blend. You can use white pepper instead of black pepper and substitute ground thyme instead of thyme leaves, ground marjarom, and ground rosemary.
If you enjoy a touch of heat, you can add a little cayenne pepper to the poultry rub.
How to make Homemade Poultry Seasoning
- Add the dried marjoram, dried rosemary, dried thyme, ground sage, garlic powder, black pepper, ground nutmeg, and sweet paprika to the bowl of a mortar and pestle.
- Using the pestle, grind the ingredients together, making sure to mix thoroughly to make your homemade spice blend.
- Alternatively, you can add the seasonings to a small bowl.
- Then, mix the seasonings together, to combine.
*You can also use an electric spice grinder (coffee grinder) to grind the rosemary, thyme, and marjoram together.
Pour the homemade poultry seasoning into a glass spice jar or an airtight container, out of direct sunlight, in a dark, cool place for up to 3 months (spice cabinet, not over the stove).
Recipe FAQ’s
Poultry Seasoning is a combination of dried seasonings often used when making roast chicken, roast turkey, stuffing recipes, and other poultry dishes. The main ingredients are sage, thyme, rosemary, marjoram, nutmeg, paprika, and garlic powder.
You can adjust the seasonings to your taste preference by leaving out or reducing spices or adding other spices you enjoy.
If you don’t have all the ingredients to make your own spice blend, you can mix 2 teaspoon of sage and 1 teaspoon of dried thyme or marjoram to replace one tablespoon of poultry seasoning.
Although it’s named for poultry, this seasoning can be used in a variety of dishes, including pork chops, stuffing, soups, and vegetable dishes.
